Taita Taveta Unveils Landmark County Energy Plan to Drive Inclusive Growth

Voi, Kenya — Taita Taveta County has taken a decisive step toward transforming its energy future with the official launch of the County Energy Plan, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at scaling up energy access, attracting investment, and positioning the county as a regional leader in sustainable power solutions.

The landmark event, hosted at the scenic Voi Wildlife grounds, was presided over by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, alongside Governor H.E. Andrew Mwadime, Deputy Governor H.E. Christine Kilalo, and senior county officials. The launch attracted wide participation from public and private sector stakeholders, development partners, and community representatives.

The County Energy Plan outlines clear strategies to expand both grid and off-grid connectivity, promote adoption of clean energy technologies, and strengthen power infrastructure to accelerate economic growth and social inclusion.

Among the key partners present was the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), led by Eng. Stephen Okumu, PE. MIEK, County Business Manager for Taita Taveta. Eng. Okumu and his team presented ongoing and planned connectivity programs, with emphasis on expanding the reach of the Last Mile Connectivity initiative.

“As Kenya Power, we are proud to be part of this transformative journey. Our mission is simple yet powerful—to light up every corner of Taita Taveta, ensuring no home, institution, or business is left behind,” Eng. Okumu affirmed.

Following the unveiling, the delegation visited Ndelemani in Mbololo and Mnaoni in Kaloleni Ward, where the Last Mile Connectivity Project was officially launched. The initiative is set to connect hundreds of households to the national grid, improving living standards and unlocking opportunities for small-scale enterprises in rural communities.

Voi MP Hon. Khamis Abdi Chome, who attended the event, welcomed the project, stressing the need for sustained collaboration to expand electricity access countywide.

“Electricity is a catalyst for progress—from improved education and healthcare to increased agricultural productivity. We must now ensure that connectivity translates into real impact on the ground,” said Hon. Chome.

Governor Mwadime highlighted the county’s resolve to align its energy development agenda with Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), and Sustainable Development Goal 7—ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

“This is not just a ceremonial event—it’s a commitment to our people. With energy comes opportunity, and with opportunity comes prosperity,” Governor Mwadime said.

With the launch, Taita Taveta’s County Energy Plan is now seen as a model for devolved energy planning, setting the stage for structured, inclusive, and transformative access to energy across Kenya’s counties.

As the day drew to a close against the vast Tsavo landscape, the message was clear:
Taita Taveta is ready to power homes, ignite innovation, and energize communities for a brighter, more sustainable future.
