Buuri, Meru County — The Talanta Hela programme has been launched in Buuri Constituency as part of wider efforts to curb teenage pregnancies and drug abuse among young people during the December long holiday.

The colourful event, hosted by Buuri Member of Parliament Mugambi Rindikiri, brought together more than 650 youths who showcased a wide range of talents, skills and abilities. Speaking during the launch, MP Rindikiri said engaging young people in constructive and income-generating activities is a critical step in addressing social challenges such as substance abuse and early pregnancies.

He revealed that the Buuri Constituency ICT Hub has been fully equipped with computers and reliable internet connectivity to help youths acquire digital and online monetization skills. According to the legislator, the facility will enable young people to learn how to earn online, build digital careers and improve their livelihoods.

“Youths need opportunities that keep them busy, productive and hopeful. Through Talanta Hela and the ICT hub, we want to ensure they have practical skills that can translate into income,” Rindikiri said.

During the event, participants displayed talents in fashion design, creative wear, painting, music, spoken word, gymnastics and poetry. Each participant received a token of appreciation in recognition of their talent and effort.

Nominated Member of Parliament Dorothy Muthoni congratulated the youths for actively taking part in the programme and encouraged them to turn their talents into sustainable sources of income. She emphasized that creativity and innovation can open doors to self-employment and long-term economic empowerment.

Guest speaker Carol Rindikiri urged the young people to remain passionate and committed to developing their skills, noting that consistency and dedication are key to transforming talent into meaningful opportunities.

The event also took a political turn, with MP Rindikiri criticizing Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua over what he termed as a “one-term narrative.” He argued that such remarks mislead communities and risk isolating them from government-led development initiatives.

Rindikiri called on the Meru community to support the government, adding that after President William Ruto’s term, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki stands a strong chance of ascending to the presidency.

The Talanta Hela programme is part of a national initiative aimed at nurturing youth talents, promoting self-reliance and steering young people away from social vices through empowerment and skills development.
