Meru, Kenya — Police in Meru have recovered 80 mobile phones, four laptops, and specialised tools believed to have been used in dismantling stolen phones for spare parts following a dawn ambush operation.
The items, which include a soldering gun and a hot air blower, were recovered during an operation led by Imenti North Police Commander Ambrose Kyalo.
According to Kyalo, the recovery followed a report made on Monday night, after which one of the suspects guided officers to a premises where the stolen electronics and dismantling tools were concealed.
“The recovery followed an incident reported last night, after which the suspect led our officers to a premises where the stolen phones, laptops and dismantling tools were found,” Kyalo said.
Police arrested four suspects, who are currently being held at Meru Central Police Station as investigations continue. Among those in custody is a minor, whom officers believe is the key suspect behind a series of phone snatching incidents reported in Makutano, Gakoromone, Gitimbine, and other areas within Meru town.
Authorities say the suspects are part of a network involved in stealing phones and dismantling them for resale as spare parts.
Commander Kyalo cautioned members of the public to exercise vigilance, particularly during late hours.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant, avoid deserted routes and promptly report stolen phones and other valuables to aid faster recovery,” he added.
Residents who have lost mobile phones or laptops in Meru town, Makutano, and surrounding areas have been advised to visit Meru Central Police Station with proof of ownership to identify and reclaim their recovered property.
Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow as officers pursue leads linked to the suspected phone theft syndicate.
