Tigania East, Kenya – Two people have died while two others have been arrested following a violent incident in Lailuba village in Tigania East Constituency, Meru County.
According to residents, the incident began on Saturday afternoon when a man visited his mother-in-law’s home to persuade her to seek medical treatment after she fell ill. However, a disagreement reportedly broke out, during which two of the woman’s sons and a daughter allegedly attacked the man, killing him.
The killing sparked anger among neighbours, who stormed the homestead in retaliation. In the ensuing chaos, members of the crowd attacked one of the suspects, beating him severely. The mob also set fire to two houses where the other suspects were believed to be hiding before security officers arrived and rescued them.
The suspect who had been beaten by the crowd later died while being rushed to hospital.
Buuri Chief John Mamira confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic and unfortunate.
“It is very unfortunate that the man who had gone to help his sick mother-in-law ended up losing his life in such circumstances,” said Mamira.
The chief revealed that he had visited the elderly woman just last week to encourage her to continue taking her medication after she had previously been admitted to hospital.
Residents condemned the violence and urged members of the community to resolve disputes peacefully rather than resorting to violence. Some neighbours also noted that the family had been living in isolation and rarely participated in community activities.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the mortuary at Miathene Level 4 Hospital as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, two suspects — a brother and sister — have been arrested and are being held at Muthaara Police Station pending further investigations.
