CHICAGO, USA – Former United States President Barack Obama was visibly emotional as his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, paid a heartfelt tribute to his legacy during the official opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

The historic event brought together three living former U.S. presidents — Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Joe Biden — in a rare display of bipartisan unity. Notably absent was President Donald Trump, who was not invited amid a long-running political feud with the Obamas.

During her remarks, Michelle Obama praised her husband’s resilience and leadership during his two terms in office, highlighting achievements that included expanding healthcare access, guiding the country through economic recovery, authorizing the operation that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Barack, you gotta look at me,” Michelle said, drawing laughter from the audience. “Eight years in the crucible and not once did you melt from the heat.”

She noted that Obama had dedicated himself to serving Americans while facing extraordinary scrutiny as the nation’s first Black president.

“You battled lies about your birthright, your faith, your patriotism,” she said, emphasizing the challenges he encountered while in office.

The emotional tribute appeared to overwhelm the former president, who was seen wiping away tears. When he later took the stage, Obama acknowledged the moment, joking: “She knew she was going to mess me up, and she did it anyway.”

The opening of the Obama Presidential Center marks a significant milestone nearly a decade after Obama left office in 2017. Located in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park on the city’s South Side, the 20-acre campus stands near the neighborhood where the Obamas lived before moving to the White House.

Speaking during the ceremony, Obama said the center was designed to inspire civic engagement and community participation.

“I hope this place reminds us what we can achieve when we embrace our shared responsibilities as citizens,” he said.

The former president described the center as a “vibrant, living celebration of community” and a space where future generations can learn, engage, and contribute to society.

Although neither Obama nor Michelle mentioned President Trump directly, several remarks were interpreted by political observers as subtle criticism of the current political climate. Obama spoke of a nation experiencing “anger and division” while expressing confidence that Americans continue to seek “fairness, common sense and mutual respect.”

Unlike traditional presidential libraries that primarily preserve documents and artifacts, the Obama Presidential Center combines museum exhibits with community-focused facilities, including a public library, basketball court, playground, recording studio, and educational spaces.

The project, reportedly costing approximately $850 million, has faced several challenges over the years, including construction delays, rising costs, legal disputes, and criticism over its impact on local communities. Some residents expressed concerns that the development could accelerate gentrification in Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods.

Supporters, however, argue that the center will generate economic opportunities, attract tourism, and serve as a lasting tribute to America’s first Black president and his enduring influence on public service and civic leadership.

As visitors begin exploring the landmark institution, the Obama Presidential Center stands as both a reflection of Barack Obama’s presidency and a symbol of the power of community engagement, leadership, and public service.
