Former U.S. Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore is set to visit Kenya from June 12 to 14, 2025, to lead a high-impact climate training session as part of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training, a global initiative aimed at empowering grassroots action against climate change.
In a statement released by The Climate Reality Project, which Gore founded, the upcoming event in Nairobi is being positioned as a cornerstone of the organisation’s ongoing REALITY® Tour. The tour, which launched in Paris in March, is mobilising climate advocates and leaders across the world in the lead-up to COP30 in Brazil later this year.
“Kenya is at the forefront of the world’s efforts to solve the climate crisis,” Gore said. “The impacts of the crisis in Kenya are having profound consequences that worsen food insecurity, increase energy burdens, and displace people from their homes. At the same time, Kenya has become a global leader on clean energy, showing countries around the world how climate action can work at the local and national levels.”
The Nairobi training will be the 59th Climate Reality Leadership Corps training and will convene hundreds of climate advocates, experts, and community leaders. The goal: to deepen understanding of the climate emergency, build communication and advocacy skills, and catalyse immediate action across the East African region and beyond.
Over the two-and-a-half-day session, participants will explore Kenya’s achievements and challenges in the transition to a clean energy economy, including efforts to strengthen resilience, expand renewable energy access, and advance green industrialization.
The training will also delve into the critical issue of climate finance, spotlighting both the existing gaps and new opportunities to unlock funding through greater international commitment and accountability.
Gore emphasised that “the world cannot afford to delay climate action further,” adding that Climate Reality training provides “the latest and best science about the causes and solutions for the crisis” along with the tools needed to demand real action from global leaders.
Attendees will also benefit from insights shared by prominent African climate leaders, including Wanjira Mathai, Managing Director for Africa and Global Partnerships at the World Resources Institute; Nyaguthii Chege, Chairperson of the Green Belt Movement; and Raya Ahmed Famau, Executive Director of the Lamu Women’s Alliance.
The Nairobi stop comes at a critical time for Kenya, which has recently experienced a surge in extreme weather events—from prolonged droughts to catastrophic floods—placing millions at risk and heightening the urgency for effective climate adaptation strategies.
The Climate Reality Project, with a global network of over 3.8 million members, aims to inspire a renewed sense of hope and urgency in the climate movement. The Nairobi training will give rise to a new cohort of Climate Reality Leaders dedicated to accelerating just and equitable climate solutions across East Africa and the world.
Following Nairobi, the REALITY® Tour will continue to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, later in 2025. In addition to in-person events, the Climate Reality Project is rolling out a new online platform that gives global audiences access to exclusive training content, including Gore’s renowned climate presentation.
For Kenya and the East African region, the visit by Al Gore and the upcoming training represent both recognition of past leadership and a call to even bolder action.
