NAIROBI, Kenya – The Government has warned Kenyans to prepare for potentially heavy rains during the October-December short-rains season, with the El Niño phenomenon forecast to persist into early next year.

However, officials say the intensity and distribution of the rains will depend on several climate factors, including the Indian Ocean Dipole, which significantly influences rainfall patterns across East Africa.

Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Communications Stephen Isaboke, who chairs the National Crisis Communication Standing Committee, says the Government has activated preparedness measures ahead of the anticipated rains.
The rains are expected across all 47 counties, although their impact is likely to vary depending on local weather and environmental conditions. National and county governments are currently mapping flood-prone and other high-risk areas while identifying safer locations where affected communities could be evacuated if the situation worsens.

The Government is also working with humanitarian partners, including the Kenya Red Cross, to prepare shelter, food and other essential supplies for people who may be displaced by flooding

Health authorities are meanwhile preparing for possible increases in malaria, diarrhea diseases and other health risks associated with flooding, poor sanitation and contaminated water.

The Ministry of Education has also mapped examination centres that could be affected by flooding and developed contingency plans to relocate examinations to safer venues where necessary.

Isaboke says the National Crisis Communication Standing Committee will coordinate Government agencies and county authorities to ensure Kenyans receive timely, accurate and verified information throughout the rainy season.

The communication strategy will rely on national and vernacular radio stations, digital platforms and other public information channels to reach communities, particularly those in high-risk areas.

The Government says the exact budget for the response has not yet been determined, as the financial requirements will depend on the severity and geographical impact of the rains.
