Samburu, Kenya – Kenyans are set to witness a rare celestial spectacle tonight as a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a Blood Moon, coincides with the alignment of Saturn in the night sky.  The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife marked the occasion with the official launch of Astro-Tourism in Kenya, positioning the country’s national parks and wild spaces as world-class stargazing destinations at Samburu Sopa Lodge.

The event was presided over by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano, alongside Kenya Wildlife Service Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga, Samburu Governor Jonathan Lati Leleliit, Kenya Space Agency Director General Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey, and Kenya Tourism Board Acting CEO Allan Njoroge.

Kenya’s diverse landscapes – from Taita Hills to Mount Kenya, the coastline, and the vast Samburu plains – are now being promoted as ideal locations for astronomy enthusiasts, thanks to their clear and unpolluted skies.

“Kenya is not only home to breathtaking wildlife and landscapes, but also a gateway to the stars,” said CS Miano, emphasizing the country’s growing appeal as a destination for both nature and science tourism.

To crown the night, the CS also officially unveiled a new planetarium at Samburu Sopa Lodge, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the universe beyond the savannah.

Astronomy experts highlight Samburu as one of the best places on earth for celestial observation, due to its pristine night skies and minimal light pollution.
