Nairobi, KenyaLamu, a 22-year-old lion housed at Stedmak Gardens, continues to defy the odds, living well beyond the typical lifespan of wild lions, which ranges between 12 and 16 years. Rescued and relocated to the facility in 2012, Lamu’s longevity is a testament to sustained monitoring and specialized veterinary care.

A veterinary team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), led by senior wildlife veterinarian Dr. Benard Rono, conducted an assessment on Lamu on Thursday afternoon. The team confirmed that the lion remains under active treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition he has lived with since 2020.

“Lamu receives regular physiotherapy-like care. Just as with humans recovering from spinal injuries, controlled and gentle walking exercises remain essential to maintaining mobility and relieving discomfort,” said Dr. Rono. “Our team has been monitoring his nutrition, muscle condition and general response to treatment.”

Despite his advanced age, Lamu remains stable under a carefully managed care routine. His continued survival and adaptability highlight advancements in captive wildlife health management and rehabilitation techniques in Kenya.

The veterinary team also confirmed that all other animals at Stedmak Gardens are in good health, following a routine welfare inspection by KWS.

KWS reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the welfare of wildlife under human care, stating that collaboration with partners and sanctuary facilities remains crucial in conservation efforts.

“Animal welfare is central to our mandate. We are committed to providing high-quality veterinary support, monitoring and protection to all wildlife across the country,” KWS said in a statement.

Lamu’s story, marked by resilience and compassionate care, stands as a reminder of Kenya’s growing capabilities in wildlife rehabilitation and long-term animal health management.
