Meru County, Kenya — Residents of Ngare Ndare in Buuri Sub-County, Meru County, are celebrating a major milestone in healthcare delivery following the completion and upgrading of Ngare Ndare Dispensary through a strategic partnership between Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the Meru County Government.
For years, families in this remote area were forced to travel more than 50 kilometres to access basic healthcare services — a journey that often resulted in delayed treatment, especially for pregnant women, children and the elderly. Today, that reality has changed.
Under the partnership, the Meru County Government constructed a new maternity ward, while Lewa Wildlife Conservancy invested over KSh 3.3 million in modern medical equipment. The equipment includes maternity beds, newborn warmers, delivery kits and other essential items that have significantly strengthened maternal and child healthcare services at the facility.
To further improve healthcare outcomes, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy also upgraded the dispensary’s laboratory with modern diagnostic equipment valued at more than KSh 5 million. In addition, the conservancy financed the employment of a laboratory technician, supplies reagents on a quarterly basis, and provides annual maintenance for the equipment — ensuring reliable and timely disease diagnosis.
Beyond medical equipment, Lewa has supported the facility through the construction of staff houses and modern sanitation facilities, and by funding the salaries of additional healthcare workers for over five years. This holistic approach has greatly improved both service delivery and staff retention in the remote area.
With these upgrades, Ngare Ndare Dispensary is now offering timely, reliable and life-saving healthcare services to thousands of residents, marking a major boost to community health and wellbeing in Buuri Sub-County.
