Ruben Amorim Sacked: Manchester United Dismiss Head Coach After 14 Months

Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing his 14-month tenure at Old Trafford to an abrupt end amid growing internal tension and concerns over his management style.

Prime Africa News understands the decision was taken following a Monday morning meeting involving Amorim, director of football Jason Wilcox, and chief executive Omar Berrada, during which United’s leadership concluded that the Portuguese coach’s position had become untenable.

Breakdown in Confidence

According to sources familiar with the situation, United’s hierarchy had become increasingly concerned about Amorim’s emotional and inconsistent behaviour, as well as his refusal to adapt from his preferred 3-4-3 tactical system. Club officials reportedly felt this rigidity contributed to poor performances and a growing loss of confidence within the squad.

The final straw is understood to have come after a scheduled meeting last Friday between Amorim and Wilcox, where the team’s tactical direction was discussed in detail. Prime Africa News has been told Amorim’s response during that meeting was perceived as negative and overly emotional, deepening doubts about his leadership.

Interim Arrangements

In the immediate term, Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge of the team for Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley. However, United are understood not to have made a final decision on whether to appoint an interim head coach for the remainder of the season or wait until the summer to make a permanent appointment.

Amorim’s Perspective

Amorim, formerly of Sporting CP, is believed to feel let down by the club hierarchy, citing a lack of backing and support during a challenging period. Despite United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the 39-year-old had remained optimistic about securing a Champions League place, especially with the expected return of key players from Africa Cup of Nations duty.

What Next for United?

The dismissal adds another chapter to Manchester United’s ongoing managerial instability, as the club once again faces the task of rebuilding both on and off the pitch. Attention will now turn to how United steady the ship in the short term—and who they identify as the long-term figure to lead the club back to sustained success.
