URGENT CALL FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION OVER PLIGHT OF KENYANS IN RUSSIAN ARMY

Nairobi, Kenya – Families of Kenyans allegedly recruited into the Russian army have issued a passionate and urgent appeal to the Government of Kenya, demanding immediate intervention to secure the safe return of their loved ones caught in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine War.

In a joint statement released alongside VOCAL Africa, the families described a harrowing situation in which hundreds of young Kenyan men were reportedly lured into foreign military service under unclear and exploitative circumstances, only to find themselves trapped in a brutal conflict far from home.

Speaking as parents, siblings, and relatives, the families expressed deep anguish, accusing the government of failing in its constitutional duty to protect its citizens abroad. They claimed repeated pleas for intervention have been met with silence, delays, and what they termed as “empty assurances.”

According to the statement, more than 1,000 Kenyans are believed to have been recruited into the Russian army, with at least 772 having signed formal contracts. Of these, approximately 518 have reportedly been deployed, or are in the process of being deployed, to active combat zones. Disturbingly, the families cited reports indicating that at least five Kenyans have been killed after refusing to be sent to the frontlines.

The families allege that those affected are enduring inhumane treatment, coercion, and serious human rights violations — claims that, if verified, point to a growing humanitarian crisis involving Kenyan nationals abroad.

They questioned the effectiveness of Kenya’s diplomatic presence, particularly its foreign missions, arguing that taxpayer-funded embassies have failed to provide protection or meaningful assistance in a time of crisis.

“What is the purpose of an embassy if it cannot safeguard its own citizens in times of danger?” the statement posed.

The appeal places direct responsibility on the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, led by Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, to urgently activate diplomatic channels and secure the immediate repatriation of all affected Kenyans.

The families are also demanding answers over what they describe as government inaction, raising critical questions about whether early warnings were ignored, what efforts have been made to locate and rescue those affected, and why there has been little transparency in communication with families.

Beyond immediate rescue efforts, the statement calls for comprehensive investigations into recruitment networks suspected of facilitating the process, accountability within government structures, and stronger safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The appeal comes at a poignant moment as Kenyans prepare to mark the Easter season — a time typically associated with hope and family unity. For these families, however, the period is overshadowed by fear and uncertainty.

“Instead of celebration, we live in constant fear… knowing that at any moment there could be devastating news,” the statement reads.

The families, together with VOCAL Africa, are now calling on civil society, religious leaders, the media, and the broader Kenyan public to amplify their voices and push for urgent government action.

“Our sons are not expendable. Their lives matter. Their safety must be secured,” they said. The Government of Kenya has yet to issue an official response to the latest claims.
