Migori County, Kenya — What was anticipated to be a successful and symbolic development tour in ODM leader Raila Odinga’s political stronghold turned into an embarrassing scene for local leaders and the presidency, after an unidentified individual hurled what appeared to be a shoe at President William Ruto mid-speech.
President Ruto, who has embarked on a nationwide development campaign, was in South Nyanza to launch key government projects. His visit was intended to underline his administration’s commitment to equitable development, with a clear message that “no part of the country should be marginalised or left behind,” according to statements on his official social media accounts.
During his tour, the Head of State officially commissioned the Suna West Sub-County Office in Piny Oyie and broke ground for the 298-unit Kehancha Affordable Housing Project in Kuria West, Migori County.
However, the presidential visit took a dramatic turn later in the day during a large public gathering in Migori town. A now-viral video captures a moment of unexpected disruption as President Ruto was addressing the crowd. A man—allegedly disguised in a manner resembling the president—was seen being struck by an object believed to be a shoe. The incident halted the speech briefly, leaving the audience stunned.
A voice in the video, presumably the person filming, is heard expressing disbelief and concern over the act, calling it shameful. Security personnel quickly moved to contain the situation, although it remains unclear whether the perpetrator was apprehended.
This marks the second high-profile shoe-throwing incident targeting a Kenyan head of state, the first being in 1978 when Kenya’s founding father, President Jomo Kenyatta, faced a similar act during a political rally. In that instance, the shoe-thrower was promptly arrested.
While President Ruto resumed his speech moments later, the incident has ignited debate across social platforms and within political circles, with many condemning the act as a sign of growing political intolerance.
The presidency has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
