Speaking on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at his rural home in Irunduni, where he hosted thousands of residents for Christmas celebrations, Prof Kindiki said it was unfortunate that many families were mourning loved ones at a time meant for joy and togetherness.
The Deputy President noted that most road crashes were avoidable if drivers adhered to traffic regulations and exercised caution, especially during peak travel periods.
“Many people are travelling to reunite with their families for Christmas and the New Year. Drivers, whether operating private or public vehicles, must remember they are entrusted with precious lives. Human life is invaluable and cannot be replaced,” he said.
Prof Kindiki expressed concern that fatal accidents continued to be reported daily despite intensified public awareness campaigns and increased police presence on major highways. He cited recent statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), describing the situation as alarming.
“Recent NTSA figures are heartbreaking. On Tuesday alone, at least 25 people lost their lives in road accidents. This year, we have lost too many Kenyans on our roads, yet most of these incidents could have been avoided through responsible driving,” he said.
He urged motorists to avoid speeding, drunk driving and reckless overtaking, and to ensure their vehicles were in good mechanical condition before setting out on long journeys. Passengers were also encouraged to speak out when drivers endangered their lives, saying silence often led to tragic outcomes.
The Christmas event attracted residents from across Tharaka Nithi County, transforming the Deputy President’s homestead into a vibrant centre of celebration marked by song, dance and messages of goodwill.
Beyond road safety, Prof Kindiki briefed residents on government development initiatives, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and livelihoods. He said several stalled road projects had resumed and more were scheduled to roll out in 2026.
“Road construction has resumed in many areas, and additional projects will be implemented in the coming year as the economy continues to stabilise due to sound government policies,” he said.
On electricity connectivity, the Deputy President said the national electrification programme was progressing well, with the government keen on ensuring all households are connected to power.
“We want every home connected to electricity. Funding is available because access to power is essential for improving living standards and supporting small businesses,” he added.
Residents who attended the celebrations welcomed the Deputy President’s remarks, noting that road accidents had become a major concern during the festive season. Local leaders also praised the government’s focus on infrastructure, saying improved roads and electricity would accelerate development in the region.
As he concluded, Prof Kindiki urged Kenyans to celebrate responsibly.
“Let us enjoy Christmas and welcome the New Year in good health. This season of joy should not be turned into a season of sorrow through avoidable mistakes on our roads,” he said.
