Nairobi, Kenya — President William Ruto on Tuesday met leaders from Meru County at State House, Nairobi, to chart a path for strengthening the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) at the grassroots while accelerating the county’s transformation agenda.
The meeting was led by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma and attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, alongside other county leaders. Discussions centred on rolling out participatory and democratic UDA elections beginning at the polling-centre level, a move the President said would entrench internal democracy and energise the party’s grassroots structures.
Beyond party matters, the leaders reviewed priority development programmes aimed at boosting economic growth and improving livelihoods across Meru County. President Ruto reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to fast-tracking key projects critical to healthcare, infrastructure, housing and trade.
Among the flagship initiatives highlighted was the KSh1 billion upgrade of Meru County Referral Hospital into a national referral facility, expected to enhance access to specialised healthcare services for residents and the wider Upper Eastern region. The agenda also includes electricity connections for 30,000 households, construction of 17 modern markets to support traders and farmers, and the expansion of affordable housing projects.
Infrastructure development featured prominently, with updates on ongoing road works and plans for major connectivity projects, including the KSh3 billion Nithi Bridge and the 17-kilometre Meru Town Bypass, which are set to ease transport, spur investment and decongest the town.
President Ruto emphasized that coordinated leadership between the national and county governments remains key to delivering tangible development outcomes, noting that Meru County stands to benefit significantly from the timely completion of the outlined projects.
