MERU, Kenya – Meru County has been identified as one of the regions with the lowest insurance penetration rates in Kenya, with only 1.3 percent of residents covered by insurance services, significantly below the national average recorded in several counties.
Speaking during the official opening of a three-day Insurance Open Day organized by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Meru County Deputy Governor Linda Kiome expressed concern over the low uptake of insurance products and urged residents to embrace insurance as an essential tool for financial protection and economic security.
Kiome said the awareness campaign seeks to educate the public on the importance of insurance and encourage more people to enroll in various insurance schemes designed to safeguard individuals, families, and businesses against unexpected losses.
“The low uptake of insurance services exposes many households and enterprises to financial shocks that could otherwise be mitigated through proper insurance coverage,” she noted.
The IRA’s Director of Supervision, Kalai Musee, challenged the widespread perception that insurance is only meant for wealthy individuals, emphasizing that insurance products are designed to protect people from unforeseen risks regardless of their economic status.
