Addis Ababa (Prime Africa News) – Ethiopia has announced a record-breaking milestone in its coffee sector, with more than 1.2 million tonnes of coffee produced during the current Ethiopian budget year, according to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.

Speaking at a high-level consultative meeting with federal and regional stakeholders from the security, agriculture, and trade sectors, the Authority’s Chief Director Dr. Adugna Debela emphasized the growing strength of Ethiopia’s coffee industry — both in quality and quantity.

“Significant efforts are underway to boost production while safeguarding the integrity of the sector,” Dr. Adugna noted. “Curbing illegal coffee trade remains a top priority.”

The consultative forum focused on mechanisms to clamp down on illicit coffee trafficking, which continues to pose a serious threat to the country’s export potential and local livelihoods.

In a bid to enhance the quality of Ethiopia’s globally renowned coffee, the Authority also revealed that four new coffee tasting and quality control centers are being prepared. These facilities aim to ensure that all exported coffee meets international standards and sustains Ethiopia’s reputation as the birthplace of coffee.

Ethiopian Radio reported that 409,000 tonnes of coffee have been exported to the global market in the last 11 months alone, contributing substantially to the national economy.

Authorities are optimistic that, with reinforced coordination among national and regional actors, the country can not only increase its coffee yields but also secure the full value of its coffee through legal and regulated channels.

As one of Africa’s largest coffee producers, Ethiopia’s latest production figures signal strong momentum in both domestic agricultural transformation and international market competitiveness.
