MERU, Kenya – The 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon has reached a historic milestone after cumulative fundraising from the annual event surpassed 10 million US dollars, reinforcing its role as one of Kenya’s leading conservation fundraising initiatives.
More than 1,300 athletes from 33 countries participated in this year’s race at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, with organisers projecting that the 2026 edition alone will raise over 250,000 US dollars to support wildlife conservation and community development projects.
The marathon, organised by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in partnership with Tusk, and supported by Safaricom and Huawei, has been held annually since 2000.
In the full marathon, Samson Lemayan won the men’s race after clocking 2 hours, 27 minutes and 4 seconds while Lydia Simiyu claimed the women’s title in 2 hours, 50 minutes and 39 seconds. The half marathon winners were Michael Kamau and Mercy Nelima
Speaking after the event, Charlie Mayhew President and CEO of Tusk, said the fundraising milestone demonstrates what can be achieved through long-term collaboration.
“Every shilling raised helps protect wildlife, support local communities and secure the future of some of Africa’s most important conservation landscapes,” he said.
According to the organisers, proceeds from previous editions have supported conservation programmes that have contributed to the recovery of endangered species, including Grevy’s zebras and Hawksbill turtles. The funds have also expanded access to healthcare, education and environmental protection in communities neighbouring conservation areas.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy CEO Rob Macaire described the marathon as more than a sporting event, saying it has grown into a global platform that advances wildlife conservation while improving livelihoods through investments in education, healthcare and sustainable development.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the company’s 26-year partnership with the marathon reflects its commitment to creating lasting social impact, while Huawei Kenya CEO Gao Fei  praised the event for bringing together conservation supporters from around the world in support of local communities and wildlife.
