Residents of Meru County have received a major boost in the fight against climate change following the launch of the Subuiga Dam in Kisima Ward, Buuri Constituency.

The dam, with a capacity of 150,000 cubic metres, is expected to significantly improve water availability for more than 10,000 residents from Matunda, Ntumburi, and Subuiga areas. The project aims to address the growing challenges posed by erratic weather patterns and prolonged dry seasons.

Speaking during the launch, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Head of Operations John Kinoti emphasized the urgent need for sustainable water management in the face of changing climate conditions. He urged residents to embrace rainwater harvesting and tree planting initiatives to safeguard their communities against water shortages.

“Changing weather patterns have made water management more important than ever. Communities must take proactive steps to conserve water and protect the environment,” he said.

The Subuiga Dam was constructed under Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s Community Development Programme to capture and store rainwater that would otherwise go to waste during the rainy season. Construction began in 2023 and was completed in 2025 through a collaborative partnership involving Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Ngare Nything Water Resources Users Association (WRUA), Kisima Farm, and other development partners.

Kisima Farm donated 12 acres of land for the construction of the dam, demonstrating strong private-sector support for community-driven climate solutions.

Beyond providing water for domestic use, the dam is expected to enhance agricultural productivity by supporting irrigation and farming activities. Local families are anticipated to benefit from improved food production and increased household incomes.

Members of the Ngare Nything WRUA also played a key role in the project by educating residents on water conservation practices and responsible water use, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the initiative.

The Subuiga Dam stands as a major milestone in strengthening climate resilience in Meru County, offering a sustainable solution to water scarcity while empowering communities to better withstand the effects of climate change.
