MOMBASA, Kenya — UDA Secretary General Hassan Sarai has intensified consultations with grassroots leaders in Mombasa as he pushes for stronger community engagement and increased participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sarai has been engaging community leaders across the county, urging residents to obtain national identification cards and register as voters, saying a high number of registered voters will be critical in determining the county’s political and development priorities.
He also highlighted what he termed achievements of President William Samoei Ruto’s administration, particularly in expanding access to economic opportunities, supporting livelihoods, strengthening Universal Health Coverage, promoting affordable housing and empowering young people.
“The President is doing so much for the country. We want to make sure every part of this country receives development,” Sarai said.
The UDA Secretary General also declared his support for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, saying he believes Kindiki has demonstrated the ability to deliver and should be given an opportunity to serve for two terms.
“The Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, has proven to be productive in what he does. So, as the Secretary General, I believe two terms for him in office is a must,” Sarai said.
Sarai challenged Mombasa residents to take a more active role in determining the leadership and development direction of the county.
He urged residents who do not have national identification documents to acquire them and those who are eligible to register as voters to do so, arguing that political change can only be achieved through active participation in elections.
“We want to bring change. I have a plan, and the plan can only be actualised if you, Mombasa residents, are voters. Let us reclaim our city by electing leaders with vision,” he said.
Sarai said residents should elect leaders who are willing to listen to their concerns and take practical action to address challenges affecting communities across Mombasa.
Mombasa County Women Representative aspirant Fatuma Barayan said the county requires a fresh approach to leadership, accusing the current leadership of failing to adequately serve the interests of residents.
Barayan called for an overhaul of the county’s political leadership, saying voters should consider electing new leaders who are ready to work for the people.
“We need new blood and leaders who are ready to work for the people of Mombasa,” she said.
Senate aspirant Mboto Hassan echoed the call for stronger representation of Mombasa at the national level, saying she would prioritise securing greater resources for the county if elected.
Hassan said she would also push for proper utilisation of public resources to ensure that national government funding and development programmes translate into tangible benefits for Mombasa residents.
The leaders were speaking in Mombasa during a consultative engagement that brought together community and grassroots leaders from across the county.
The meeting comes as political parties and aspirants intensify grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Mombasa expected to remain a key political battleground in the Coast region.
