SATURDAY , 25TH, WUNDANYI – The double burden of malnutrition weighs heavily on Kenya’s school-age children and adolescents, who make up a significant portion of the population at 36%.

The World Health Organization advocates for food systems that prioritize healthy, sustainable diets to address the burden of malnutrition .

In line with World Food Programme the government implemented School Meals Programme (SMP) that provides mid-day meal to pre-primary and primary school children across the Country.

Speaking at the launch event of a total of 16 modern classes in Mbauro and Mboghonyi primary schools in Wundanyi Constituency in Taita Taveta County , Migos said the government’s intention is to increase the number of students benefiting from the nutrition program from 2.6 million to 10 million across all the 47 counties.

Dr. Julius Migos

CS Education

There are some areas in our republic where school children are not yet benefiting from School feeding programme although they deserve it , at the moment the government is carrying out the feeding programme to 2.6 Million students but we intend to expand the programme to accommodate 10 Million Children across the country

Dr. Migos further highligted the need for students in the coastal region to benefit from the school nutrition project.

Wundanyi Member of Parliament Danson Mwashako advocated for programme highlighting the current state of economy saying there is a high probability a big number of pre-primary and primary school children across Taita Taveta attend classes empty stomach since their parents cannot afford full ballanced diet meal everyday .

Danson Mwashako

MP Wundanyi

There are funds allocated to feed school children under School Feeding Programme , What am requesting the government through the Ministry of Education and relevant government agencies is to consider Taita Taveta to be precise ; Wundanyi Sub-County . I urge the Education CS to conduct affarmative action on the Programme so that it can be fully rolled out for children in remote and marginalized areas to benefit

The MP further lamented on state of teachers and their working conditions in the area , Mwashako urged the government to consider the geographical nature of Taita Taveta County and consider it a hardship region since teachers operating in the region are suffering.
