The conclusion of the inaugural PGK Equator Tour has been hailed as a defining moment in Kenya’s sporting evolution, with the government reaffirming its commitment to nurturing talent and positioning the country as a competitive force on the global golf stage.

Speaking during the grand finale held on Sunday at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, said the first season of the tour had laid a strong foundation for a transformative era in Kenyan professional golf.

Mwangi noted that the finale represented more than the close of a successful tournament, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter anchored on opportunity, growth and national pride. He said the tour had provided a vital platform for showcasing emerging Kenyan golfing talent while strengthening confidence in the sport’s long-term future.

Launched in July 2025 at Ruiru Sports Club, the PGK Equator Tour traversed some of the country’s premier golf courses, including Limuru, Mt Kipipiri, Great Rift Valley, Nakuru, Diamonds Leisure, Sigona and the Royal Nairobi Golf Club. According to the Principal Secretary, the journey reflected both the depth of local golfing talent and Kenya’s rich sporting heritage.

Mwangi commended the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) for their sustained contribution to the development of the sport over the past three decades. He said the association had established a solid foundation for professional golfers through mentorship, fitness programmes, simulator training and mental health support, describing the approach as forward-looking and essential in producing world-class athletes.

He also praised the players for their discipline, passion and resilience throughout the tour, noting that their performances demonstrated that Kenyan golf is on a steady upward trajectory. Mwangi added that the players’ commitment had inspired young Kenyans to view professional golf as a viable and rewarding career path.

The Principal Secretary acknowledged the critical role played by sponsors and partners, thanking NCBA Bank, Safaricom, Visa, Britam, Kenya Airways, Johnnie Walker and Computech for their unwavering support. He said their involvement went beyond financial backing, terming it a long-term investment in Kenya’s sporting future and international competitiveness.

Mwangi further revealed that the government is finalising the review of the Sports Act and Sports Policy, a move aimed at enhancing private sector participation in sports development. He said the revised framework would open doors for deeper partnerships, improved talent monetisation and sustainable growth within the sports industry.

He highlighted the PGK Equator Tour as a critical pathway to the Magical Kenya Open, an event that continues to elevate Kenya’s profile as a global sporting and tourism destination. The Principal Secretary encouraged Kenyan golfers to remain focused on competing at the highest level, urging them to believe in their ability to challenge and defeat elite international players.

Reaffirming government support, Mwangi said the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports would continue working closely with federations and stakeholders to advance talent development and prepare athletes for major global events, including the 2028 Olympic Games. He also disclosed that the government was exploring ways to introduce golf into the school curriculum to broaden access and instil values that positively shape lives and communities.

As the curtain fell on the first edition of the PGK Equator Tour, Mwangi expressed optimism about the future of the sport, saying the success of the tour demonstrated Kenya’s readiness to host even bigger and more competitive events.

He congratulated the winners, players, organisers, sponsors and supporters, noting that their collective effort had played a crucial role in strengthening Kenyan golf and ensuring the sport continues to grow, thrive and inspire across the country.
