Nairobi, Kenya — Kenyan journalist and press freedom advocate Bill Otieno has issued a powerful open letter to global leaders, demanding an immediate end to ongoing conflicts and stronger protections for journalists working in war zones.

In the letter dated March 23, 2026, Otieno addresses heads of state across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, warning that journalists are increasingly becoming direct targets of war rather than neutral observers.

His appeal is directed at leaders including Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, among others presiding over regions affected by conflict.

This is not the first time Otieno has directly challenged global leadership. In 2025, he issued a similar open letter specifically addressed to Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump, calling for restraint and accountability amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

His latest statement significantly broadens the scope, reflecting what he describes as a “global crisis” for journalism.

The open letter highlights alarming figures:

  • Over 30 journalists killed in Sudan since 2023
  • More than 250 journalists killed in Gaza, now considered the deadliest conflict zone for media in modern history
  • Continued threats, intimidation, and killings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and the Russia–Ukraine war

“These are not isolated tragedies; they reflect a disturbing pattern of deliberate targeting,” Otieno states in the letter.

Otieno condemns the destruction of media houses, broadcasting stations, and communication infrastructure, warning that silencing journalists erodes accountability and deepens humanitarian crises.

“The deliberate targeting of journalists must be treated as a grave violation of international law,” he asserts.

The letter outlines urgent calls to action:

  • Immediate cessation of conflicts through diplomacy
  • Recognition of journalists as protected civilians under international humanitarian law
  • Compensation and support for families of slain journalists
  • Independent investigations and prosecution of perpetrators
  • Global recognition of attacks on journalists as war crimes

Otieno further urges governments to integrate journalist protection into peace agreements and ceasefire frameworks.

Beyond governments, the Nairobi-based journalist is rallying the global media fraternity to stand united.

“An attack on one journalist anywhere is an attack on press freedom everywhere,” he emphasizes, calling for collective advocacy and solidarity across borders.

In closing, Otieno frames the current global situation as a historic test of leadership and humanity.

“History will judge this moment not only by the conflicts endured, but by the courage shown in ending them and protecting those who bear witness,” he writes.
