The Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat has announced with profound sadness the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). He passed away peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 88, surrounded by his family.

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV was a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) through Hazrat Bibi Fatima and Hazrat Ali. At the age of 20, he succeeded his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, in 1957, becoming the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community. Over the course of his nearly seven-decade leadership, His Highness dedicated his life to advancing causes of spiritual, social, and economic importance, impacting not just Ismaili Muslims, but communities across the globe.

Throughout his life, Prince Karim Aga Khan worked tirelessly to present Islam as a faith rooted in compassion, tolerance, and intellectualism. Under his stewardship, the Aga Khan Development Network has grown to become one of the largest private international development agencies, addressing critical issues in health, education, culture, and economic development, particularly in underprivileged regions. His vision and leadership made him a widely recognized statesman, advocating for peace, human dignity, and sustainable development worldwide.

A Global Legacy of Service

Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, to Prince Aly Khan and Joan Yarde-Buller, His Highness was thrust into leadership at a young age. At just 20, he became the Imam of the Ismaili community, ushering in a new era not only for the Ismaili Muslims but for the global community as well. Over the years, he dedicated himself to alleviating poverty, improving education, promoting healthcare, and preserving cultural heritage.

Under his guidance, the Aga Khan Development Network initiated a multitude of groundbreaking projects across Africa, Asia, and beyond. These efforts included the establishment of universities, hospitals, schools, and various income-generating programs, benefiting millions and enhancing the lives of countless people.

Prince Karim Aga Khan was also a proponent of enlightened pluralism, fostering development and governance systems rooted in inclusivity and progress. His tireless efforts to break down barriers and foster positive change have left a lasting impact on regions once marked by challenges and conflict.

Succession of the 50th Imam

The succession of the 50th Imam has already been designated, and a formal announcement will be made following the reading of His Highness’s Will in the coming days. Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared shortly.

The passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan marks the end of an era of transformative leadership, one that shaped the course of history for Ismaili Muslims and the world. Leaders from all corners of the globe are expected to pay their respects to the man whose pioneering vision and compassionate leadership reshaped communities and brought hope to millions.
