MERU, Kenya – Young people across the country are being urged to embrace Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) programs, which are increasingly viewed as one of the most direct routes to employment in today’s competitive job market.
A visit to Nkabune and Mukiria Technical Training Institutes in Meru reveals the rapid rise of CBET courses—practical, skills-driven programs designed to equip learners with the exact competencies needed in the workplace. Unlike traditional theory-focused models, CBET emphasizes hands-on training, flexibility, and real industry exposure.
Nkabune TTI Principal Penninah Ngina said CBET has reshaped technical training by aligning learning with employer demands. She reported a significant increase in enrolment since the rollout of CBET programs, as more youth seek market-ready skills.

To strengthen practical training, Nkabune has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding with companies across Meru County, ensuring students access attachments and fieldwork—core components of CBET learning.
Mukiria TTI Senior Principal Michael Maina shared similar observations, noting that CBET graduates transition to the job market faster because their training prepares them to perform specific tasks from day one. He said many alumni are already working on government projects, including the Affordable Housing initiative in Meru Town.
Maina added that government efforts such as the “Kazi Majuu” program—which connects skilled Kenyans to both local and international job opportunities—further position CBET graduates for success, thanks to their certified, practical skills.
Students are equally optimistic. Faith Wamuyu, an electrical engineering trainee at Nkabune, said CBET’s practical approach gives learners confidence and relevance amid expanding construction projects nationwide.
Nkabune pastry instructor Emily Gikunda encouraged more youths to join TVET institutions, noting that CBET courses in areas such as pastry and culinary arts open doors to employment and self-reliance.
CBET programs now span sectors including construction, agriculture, engineering, hospitality, and applied sciences. Each course is developed in partnership with industry experts to ensure graduates attain real-world, in-demand competencies.
With the growing need for skilled workers both locally and abroad, CBET training is solidifying its place as one of the most reliable and sustainable pathways for Kenyan youths seeking meaningful livelihoods.
