Police bosses reveal MP Koimburi used proxies to stage abduction, then slept in a hotel

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political landscape, the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have accused Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi of orchestrating his own abduction in a bid to stir political tension and gain public sympathy.

Addressing the media at DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road, DCI Director Amin Mohamed and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja revealed that intensive investigations had exposed what they described as a “carefully choreographed scheme” by the legislator and his associates.

“Fortunately, we’ve been able to expedite the investigations and to expose him to the public that the MP was indeed not abducted,” said Mohamed. “We were able to account for all his movements from the time he attended church up to where he slept at night. We have identified the hotel and the room number where he slept.”

Authorities say the probe uncovered glaring inconsistencies in the MP’s abduction narrative. Surveillance and forensic tracking reportedly placed Koimburi at known locations, contradicting claims that he was forcibly taken.

According to the DCI, their team faced deliberate obstruction when they attempted to interrogate Koimburi while he was hospitalized—an action they say further cast doubt on his claims.

A Scripted Capture

Investigators say Koimburi’s alleged plot was executed with the help of close allies and proxies. Three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the scheme: Peter Kiratu (Juja Constituency Development Fund chairman), businessman Cyrus Kieru Muhia, and Karanja Gatana.

Muhia, who owns a supermarket in Kahawa West, told detectives that Kiratu asked to borrow his Subaru Forester on May 24 to provide “additional security” for the MP during a church event in Mugutha. The next day, Muhia met Gatana and three unknown individuals at Kiratu’s homestead before they proceeded to survey the church route.

On May 25, acting on Kiratu’s instructions, Muhia drove the Subaru with two men to the church. Upon arrival, the two men quickly exited the vehicle, and screams followed as MP Koimburi was reportedly “forced” into the car.

The group then drove toward Jacaranda Coffee Research via Kambogo Road, where they rendezvoused with Kiratu’s Honda CRV. According to police, it was Koimburi himself who instructed the driver to stop at a specific location.

Muhia was then left behind with two men, who threatened him into silence.

Political Fallout Looms

The alleged staged abduction has ignited widespread public and political debate. Koimburi, who is allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now faces serious legal and political repercussions.

“This wasn’t just a misuse of public trust—it was an attempt to destabilize the country by creating a false narrative that would provoke sympathy and tension,” said IG Kanja.

Police have promised that once the full investigation is concluded, appropriate legal action will be taken against the MP and all co-conspirators involved.

As the nation watches closely, this case is expected to set a precedent on the misuse of political power and the consequences of manipulating public emotions for personal gain.
