NAIROBI, Kenya – Premier Hospital has earned Level 5 certification, marking an important step in its ongoing commitment to providing quality healthcare and meeting the government’s national standards. This certification is part of the government’s ongoing work to regularly assess and classify hospitals based on their capacity, quality of care, infrastructure, and ability to treat different types of patients. The system helps Kenyans find quality healthcare and increases accountability in the health sector.
Speaking after receiving the certification, Premier Hospital Chief Executive Officer Charles Kariuki said the recognition was a testament to the institution’s dedication to excellence and continuous improvement.
“It is a good feeling when independent assessors come in, evaluate your services, and give their verdict on the quality of care you provide. Our hard work has paid off, and we remain committed to offering our patients the highest standards of healthcare,” said Kariuki.
Over the years, hospitals across Kenya have invested heavily in modern medical equipment and specialized services to improve patient outcomes and reduce the need for Kenyans to seek treatment abroad. Premier Hospital is among the facilities that have expanded its services to cater to complex medical conditions.
Kariuki noted that the hospital has fully embraced the government’s Social Health Authority (SHA) programme and is working closely with authorities to support the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“We are working together with the government to ensure that Universal Health Coverage becomes a reality. We have invested heavily in specialized services, including dialysis and cancer treatment, which are critical components of the government’s healthcare agenda. However, delayed reimbursements remain a challenge for many private hospitals,” he said.
The CEO assured Kenyans that the country’s healthcare sector has made significant strides and is increasingly capable of handling complex medical conditions that previously forced patients to seek treatment overseas.
“We want to assure Kenyans that our hospitals have qualified doctors, skilled healthcare professionals, and the necessary technology to provide quality treatment locally. We have the capacity to treat many of the conditions that have traditionally driven patients abroad. Through continued investment in technology and expertise, we are ready to serve the public,” Kariuki affirmed.
Healthcare costs continue to be a major concern for many Kenyan families, with some forced to sell property and other investments to finance medical treatment. Kariuki said Premier Hospital is committed to providing affordable healthcare services and that treatment costs remain competitive compared to those incurred by patients seeking care outside the country.
Premier Hospital Quality and Safety Expert Everline Gathoni said the Level 5 certification demonstrates the hospital’s adherence to high standards of patient care and safety.
“The certification is proof that the services we provide meet the required quality standards. It demonstrates our commitment to patient safety and assures the public that they will receive quality healthcare services whenever they visit our facility,” said Gathoni.
As Kenya continues implementing healthcare reforms aimed at expanding access and improving service delivery, hospital certification remains a key tool in ensuring patients receive safe, effective, and quality healthcare across both public and private facilities.
