MOMBASA, Kenya – In the wake of AI usage in day-to-day life, many people across the world use AI to ease their work, but the fingerprint left on the AI tools takes away the right of the person and tames it as AI-generated content.
Addressing Journalists after engagement on intellectual property law on Kenya’s Copyright Act, Trademark Act, data protection laws, defamation, and the ethical use of AI in newsrooms at Baraza Media hub in Mombasa, the MMS advocates take through the journalists on the importance of knowing what laws affect their day-to-day work.
Felicia Tunje, an advocate, noted the need for journalists to know the benefits and the disadvantages of using AI noted that once an AI tool is used as an editor or to enhance a story, one lost his right as the author of the story, and AI claims the rights of the article.
“Journalists need to be aware of such tricks because you can do the whole story, and with that move to the AI tool, the copyright goes to AI, it’s unfair, but that’s the truth,” noted Felicia.
The Journalists were urged by Advocate Lilian Makanga to always verify their source of information before publishing in order to avoid legal suits.
“With AI voice cloning and deepfakes one can be easly carried away with fake information” she noted.
Baraza Media Lab Mombasa communications coordinator Rajab Salim said the programme aimed to equipping journalists with skills which will help them to identify manipulated information and understand their legal rights as well their responsibilities in their working places.
“The workshop has provided guidance for journalists different aspects but moreso on copyright protection, fair use of content and handling defamation claims which has seen some journalist fined heavly by the courts”, he said.
