In a landmark initiative aimed at fostering sustainable development, the leadership of Taita Taveta County, led by Governor H.E. Andrew Mwadime, convened a pivotal meeting with key national government officials. The meeting focused on exploring the transformative potential of iron ore mining and value addition in Kishushe.

The high-level discussions were graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Hon. EGH Salim Mvurya, and Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi. The dialogue underscored the county’s strategic vision of utilizing its mineral wealth to drive economic growth and improve living standards.
Governor Andrew Mwadime highlighted the potential economic impact of the proposed development.
The establishment of iron ore processing and steel manufacturing plants in Kishushe will be a game-changer for our county. It will create significant job opportunities and drive local economic growth, reducing unemployment rates drastically
he remarked
The meeting also underscored the broader infrastructural benefits that such investments would bring. “These projects will necessitate the enhancement of critical infrastructure, including roads, power, and water supply. This will not only support the mining activities but also benefit the wider community,” added Governor Mwadime.
Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya emphasized the national government’s commitment to supporting such transformative initiatives. “The development of the mining sector is a priority for us, and we are committed to working with county governments to ensure that these projects bring maximum benefits to the local populations. The Kishushe iron ore project is a perfect example of how we can achieve this,” he stated.
Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of value addition in the mining sector.
By focusing on value addition, we ensure that the benefits of our mineral resources are fully realized within the country. This not only boosts local economies but also positions Kenya as a key player in the global mineral market
he said
The county leadership was well-represented at the meeting, with key figures expressing their support for the initiative. Speaker of the County Assembly Wisdom Mwamburi highlighted the legislative backing for such projects. “The County Assembly is fully behind this initiative. We are ready to pass the necessary legislation to facilitate the smooth implementation of these projects,” he affirmed.
Senator Johnes Mwaruma noted the long-term benefits of the project for the youth. “This project promises to provide sustainable employment for our young people, giving them a chance to build a future right here at home,” he commented.
Voi MP Hon. Khamis Abdi Chome emphasized the project’s potential to uplift the entire region. “The economic ripple effects of this project will be felt across Taita Taveta County. We expect increased business activities and improved livelihoods for our people,” he said.
Wundanyi MP Hon. Danson Mwashako Mwakuwona also expressed his enthusiasm. “This is a historic moment for our county. The collaborative effort between the national and county governments will ensure that the benefits of our natural resources are maximized for the prosperity of our people,” he declared.
The unified commitment from both the national and county leadership, alongside the strategic focus on sustainable development, positions the Kishushe iron ore project as a cornerstone for the future prosperity of Taita Taveta County. The successful implementation of these plans promises to transform the region, setting a precedent for resource-based development in Kenya.
