BUNGOMA, Kenya — Several passengers were injured on Saturday evening after two public service vehicles — a Bungoma Line Shuttle and a West Tours Sacco matatu — collided head-on at Sibembe area along the busy Bungoma–Mumias road.

The grisly accident, which occurred at around 5:30 p.m., left both vehicles extensively damaged and caused a major traffic snarl-up along the route.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash happened when a boda boda (motorcycle) rider attempted to join the main road from a feeder path, forcing one of the vehicles to swerve abruptly.

Fred Wekesa, an eyewitness, said the collision became inevitable once the motorcycle entered the road without checking for oncoming traffic.

“The motorcycle rider just came from the right side of the road without looking. The Bungoma Line Shuttle driver tried to avoid hitting him and ended up colliding head-on with the West Tours matatu coming from the opposite direction,” Wekesa recounted.

He added that the Sibembe stretch has become a notorious black spot due to a lack of road safety measures.

“We have lost so many people here. I am calling upon the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect bumps or speed limits. Drivers often speed through this section and without bumps, accidents keep happening,” he added.

Several passengers sustained injuries, including broken limbs, head injuries, and cuts from shattered glass. They were quickly rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Residents of Sibembe echoed Wekesa’s plea, urging KeNHA to prioritize the installation of bumps, signage, and other road safety measures to curb the rising number of accidents along the Bungoma–Mumias route.

Police officers who arrived at the scene confirmed the incident and said investigations had been launched to establish the exact cause of the crash.
