Nairobi Kenya (Prime Africa News) – Taita Taveta County took center stage in the global fight against land degradation as it proudly hosted the 2025 Desertification and Drought Day, a high-profile event emphasizing sustainable land management and climate resilience.

Under the theme “Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities,” this year’s celebrations highlighted the urgent need for land restoration as a pathway to food security, economic empowerment, and climate adaptation.

The event brought together government leaders, environmental experts, and community stakeholders to rally behind solutions that combat desertification while creating opportunities for youth and women.

A Call to Action for Land Restoration

The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Hon. Salim Mvurya, who served as the Chief Guest, underscored the pivotal role of young people in driving climate action.

“Land restoration is not just about healing the environment—it’s about unlocking jobs, securing food supplies, and empowering communities,” said Mvurya. “Our youth are at the forefront of this movement, bringing innovation and energy to sustainable development.”

Taita Taveta County, with its vast drylands and proximity to critical ecosystems like Tsavo National Park, has been severely impacted by climate change, making land restoration efforts even more crucial.

Government and Environmental Leaders Unite

The event also featured key leaders, including:

  • CS Debora Barasa (Environment and Natural Resources)

  • Governor Andrew Mwadime (Taita Taveta County)

  • Woman Representative Lydia Haika (Taita Taveta County)
  • NEMA leadership led by Emilio Mugo and CEO Mamo Mamo

  • CS Beatrice Asikul (East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development)

Governor Mwadime reaffirmed the county’s commitment to community-led environmental solutions, stating:

“Here in Taita Taveta, we are seeing the real effects of climate change—prolonged droughts, degraded lands, and threatened livelihoods. But through sustainable land management and restoration, we are turning challenges into opportunities.”

Restoring Land, Securing the Future

The event showcased local initiatives promoting tree planting, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture, demonstrating how land restoration can boost food security, create green jobs, and enhance climate resilience.

As the global community rallies behind this year’s theme, Taita Taveta stands as a beacon of hope—proving that with collective action, degraded lands can be revived, unlocking a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
