Aberdares, Kenya – What was meant to be a joyful day of health, fitness, and team spirit turned into a night of anxiety and frustration when a middle-aged woman from Utawala, Nairobi County, vanished during a mountain climbing expedition in the Rurimeria region of the Aberdares.
Teresiah Muthoni, a resident of Utawala, is believed to have spent a lonely and freezing night deep in the dense canopy of the vast Rurimeria forest after losing contact with her hiking group on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
The expedition, organized by “Beyond Miles Adventure,” a Utawala-based health and fitness group, had drawn 45 participants eager to conquer the challenging Rurimeria hill. However, the outing took a worrying turn when Muthoni, who was trailing behind while ascending, reportedly slipped off a cliff, lost consciousness, and became separated from the team.

According to reliable sources, at 6:15 p.m. — minutes before the reported fall — Muthoni sent a distress message to the group leader, saying she had lost the trail and could no longer see her teammates. She also shared a live location pin to aid her rescue. Moments later, her phone signal went dead, forcing the group to launch an urgent search in fading daylight.
Braving the freezing Aberdares night, her fellow hikers, joined by local authorities, combed the forest until dawn. After nearly 14 hours of searching, relief came on Sunday, August 10, when Muthoni was found safe and unharmed.
In a statement to members, the group’s team leader shared the good news:
“Hello team, as earlier shared, we are thankful to report that Teresiah was found safe and sound.”
The incident has sparked conversations around safety precautions during mountain expeditions, with calls for hikers to remain within sight of their teams, carry backup communication devices, and ensure guides are trained for emergency rescues.
For “Beyond Miles Adventure,” the outcome was a testament to teamwork and determination, turning what could have been a tragedy into a story of resilience and relief.
