Harare, Zimbabwe – China and Zimbabwe have marked a significant milestone in their long-standing bilateral ties, celebrating 45 years of diplomatic relations with renewed vows to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation.
Established in 1980, the diplomatic relationship between the two countries has grown into a robust alliance characterized by dynamic political collaboration, expanding trade and investment, and vibrant cultural exchange. The 45th anniversary celebration reaffirms a shared vision for mutual development and a stronger future.
In official messages exchanged to commemorate the occasion, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, underscored their commitment to further strengthening cooperation. Both nations emphasized the goal of building a high-level China-Zimbabwe community with a shared future.
Major Projects Underway Following 2024 State Visit
The anniversary celebration comes on the heels of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s State Visit to Beijing in 2024, which paved the way for an ambitious series of bilateral initiatives. During the visit, the two sides signed 17 legal instruments—14 Memoranda of Understanding and three Letters of Exchange—covering critical sectors such as infrastructure, investment, mineral development, renewable energy, and digital technology.
Several of these projects have since moved into the implementation phase, marking a new era in Sino-Zimbabwean cooperation.
Booming Trade and Investment
Zimbabwe has experienced a surge in trade and investment volumes with China over the past few years. Chinese investments have skyrocketed from $445.9 million in 2019 to $3.4 billion by the end of 2023, reflecting Beijing’s growing confidence in Zimbabwe’s economic potential.
To date, more than 472 investment licenses have been issued to Chinese enterprises operating in Zimbabwe. In addition, China has committed over $2.2 billion toward infrastructure and energy development, including projects aimed at improving electricity generation, transport networks, and urban planning.
Shared Governance Vision
During his 2024 visit to Beijing, President Mnangagwa also participated in the High-Level Meeting on State Governance, where he articulated his vision for Africa’s self-determined development. His call for an independent African growth trajectory resonated with China’s development cooperation philosophy, reinforcing the shared values that underpin the China-Zimbabwe relationship.
Cultural Exchange Deepens People-to-People Ties
Beyond economics and governance, cultural exchange has become a key pillar of the bilateral partnership. Through educational programs, art exhibitions, and cultural festivals, the people of China and Zimbabwe have engaged in meaningful exchanges that promote mutual understanding and friendship.
Language training initiatives, student exchange programs, and cultural diplomacy have helped to bridge communities, creating lasting bonds and laying a foundation for future generations.
