Nairobi, KenyaThe Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Hon. Josphat Gichunge Kabeabea, the Chairperson of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) and former Member of Parliament for Tigania East, following a coordinated search of his home and office on 14 November 2025.

According to EACC, the arrest stems from an active investigation into allegations that Mr. Kabeabea solicited bribes, intimidated investors, and accumulated unexplained wealth during his tenure as the head of the agency mandated to fight counterfeit trade in Kenya.

Investigators say the case was triggered by a complaint filed on 11 November by a Chinese investor from Hongda Automotive Limited, who alleges that Mr. Kabeabea demanded KSh 5 million to avoid instigating his arrest for purported involvement in counterfeit goods. The investor further claims that after negotiations, the alleged bribe demand was reduced to KSh 150,000—a sum reportedly sent to a mobile number believed to belong to the official’s driver.

EACC says this is not an isolated case, revealing that additional complainants have come forward with similar accusations involving threats, extortion, and abuse of office.

Following his arrest, Mr. Kabeabea was taken to the Integrity Centre Police Station, where he is undergoing interrogation as part of the ongoing probe.

In a statement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption, noting that no public official will be allowed to misuse their authority for personal gain.

EACC has indicated that more arrests and charges may follow as investigations proceed.
