March 1st, Zanzibar – The First Lady of Kenya, Mama Rachel Ruto, was in Zanzibar to attend the launch of the #WeAreEqual campaign, an initiative spearheaded by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD). This campaign, led by Africa’s First Ladies, is focused on driving transformational change in education, health, gender-based violence, and women’s economic empowerment across the continent.

The campaign launch, which took place in Zanzibar, was marked by a symbolic morning walk and a medical camp organised by the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation, under the patronage of Her Excellency Mrs. Mariam Mwinyi, the First Lady of Zanzibar.

During the launch, Mama Rachel Ruto praised Her Excellency Mrs. Mariam Mwinyi for her commitment to key causes, particularly those that align closely with Kenya’s own national priorities. Mama Ruto highlighted Kenya’s campaign, which focuses on prioritizing mothers and children as pivotal to transforming households and communities.

As part of Kenya’s efforts in the #WeAreEqual campaign, the country has chosen nutrition as a critical vehicle for driving progress. The Kenyan government is working with public primary schools to meet the ambitious goal of providing 10 million school meals by 2030, supporting the Universal School Feeding Goal.

This sustainable approach will involve key collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and development partners, all working together to build the capacity of public primary schools to grow food for consumption. The effort underscores the importance of nutrition in fostering educational success and improving overall community well-being.

Through such collaborative efforts, the #WeAreEqual campaign aims to uplift women, children, and vulnerable communities across Africa, driving meaningful change that will resonate for generations to come.
