National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula has called on security agencies to ensure the safety of voters participating in Thursday’s by-elections, emphasizing that every Kenyan has the right to cast their ballot without fear or intimidation.
Speaking shortly after voting at Namakhele Primary School in Bungoma County, as residents of Chewele–Kabuchai Ward and 15 other electoral areas headed to the polls, Dr. Wetang’ula encouraged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right.
“I want to encourage Kenyans in those electoral areas participating in this by-election to come out and vote for the candidates of their choice,” the Speaker said.
He appealed to security organs to provide adequate protection throughout the voting process, noting that their presence is critical to maintaining a peaceful environment.
“I ask our security agencies to provide sufficient security to enable people to vote freely. After voting, I encourage citizens to go home and wait for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to tally the votes,” he added.
Dr. Wetang’ula assured the electorate that enough personnel had been deployed across all affected areas to guarantee calm and order during the exercise.
“We want every eligible voter to participate without fear. Security has been enhanced to ensure that people cast their ballots freely and confidently,” he said.
The Speaker also urged voters to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to authorities, stressing that public vigilance is essential in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
At the same time, he appealed to police officers on duty to foster an atmosphere where citizens can freely express their will at the ballot box, underscoring that their role extends beyond maintaining order to upholding democratic participation.
