Monday, 27th, Nairobi – In a powerful show of solidarity, Taita Taveta leaders, spearheaded by Wundanyi Member of Parliament (MP) Danson Mwashako, have raised their voices over the persistent challenges facing teachers in the region. This comes following numerous complaints from educators who continue to work under harsh conditions that remain largely unaddressed by the government.
Speaking at the launch of 16 state-of-the-art classrooms at Mbauro and Mghambonyi Comprehensive Schools in Wundanyi Sub-county, MP Mwashako expressed deep concern over the neglect and discrimination faced by teachers in Wundanyi, Taveta, and parts of Mwatate. The MP highlighted that despite the region’s teachers enduring difficult working environments, they have not received the support they deserve.

Teachers in our area are facing unimaginable hardships, It is disheartening that, even after presenting a petition to Parliament in 2018 and a subsequent fact-finding visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Education in 2019, no concrete action has been taken to address their plight
The government, despite receiving recommendations from the parliamentary committee, has been slow to fulfill its promise of providing hardship allowances to teachers in these affected areas. This inaction has left many feeling frustrated, especially as they continue to work under extremely challenging conditions.
As the region celebrates the opening of the new classrooms, it is clear that the issues facing educators remain a pressing concern that needs urgent attention. Leaders from the region are calling for a swift resolution to ensure teachers are supported in the same way that the new classrooms reflect modern educational standards.
The need for fairness and equity for all teachers, regardless of where they serve, is now more evident than ever. Taita Taveta’s leaders are committed to advocating for the fair treatment and well-being of the region’s educators.
